The river cruise
A steady stream of riverboats make the scenic jouey along the Li River Yangtze River tour between Guilin and Yangshuo, through the heart of the landscape of outlandish limestone piacles. Farm-hands in conical hats work the rice terraces, while on the river villagers fish from bamboo rafts using trained cormorants. This is the classic Chinese landscape familar from so many scroll paintings, and for many visitors, this region represents a quintessential taste of China.
En route, guides will intermittently point out the names that the poets have bestowed on the peaks: Waiting for -Husband’s Retu; Lion Ascending the Five Finger Hill; Chicken Cage Hill; Eight Immortals Crossing the River. The jouey takes three to five hours, depending on the water level, with lunch and transport back to Guilin by bus included in the price.
It is also possible to join a boat at Xingping for a short river trip. From Yangshuo, there are local buses every 20 minutes for the one-hour jouey to Xingping, which was the main town in the area 400 years ago. Surrounded by seven peaks on the east side of the river, it is worth allowing some time to stroll through the oldest part of Xingping, where traditional houses line narrow, unpaved footpaths.
For most of the year, boats leave from the tourist port at Zhujiang Pier, 20km (12 miles) south of central Guilin; tickets include transport to the pier from the city centre. Shorter trips are also possible, as well as trips starting in Yangshuo and Xingping.
Yangshuo and nearby sights
The town of Yangshuo last minute China travel deals lies right in the midst of all this stupendous scenery, on the west bank of the Li, 60km (37 miles) downstream from Guilin. It has long enjoyed a prime position on the backpacker trail, although these days it is crammed with foreign and domestic tourists of all budgets, and fills up even more in the afteoons when -visitors disembark from the Guilin boats.
Despite all this, Yangshuo somehow manages to retain a riverside country town feel, and for most tourists remains one of the most enjoyable destinations in all of China. The great appeal is the opportunity it provides to slow down, bike or hike and explore the Chinese countryside that is otherwise only glimpsed from trains and buses. It is certainly one of the easiest places in China to spend time. There’s a good selection of reasonably priced accommodation in the town, a wide choice of clean, inexpensive restaurants with foreigner-friendly food, cheap beer and excellent Yuan coffee.
Xi Jie (West Street) is the centre of the tourist scene. Most visitors arrive either at Yangshuo Quay at the bottom of the street China best tours, or at the bus -station on the coer of Diecui Lu and Pantao Lu. Chengzhong Lu has a few pavement cafés and small guesthouses, and there are more hotels along Binjiang Lu, some with great river views.
Around Yangshuo
Try to hire a bike in town (see margin page 338) and pedal out into the countryside. The 10-km (6-mile) jouey to Moon Hill (Yueliang Shan) southwest of town is fabulous and highly recommended; the view from the summit of the hill (a reasonably tough clamber) is spellbinding. Nearby the Black Dragon Caves (Heilong Dong) can be explored by boat or by kayak if you arrange your tour with a guide or agent in Yangshuo in advance.
Yangshuo has become one of China’s foremost adventure-sport capitals in recent years. Rock-climbing, boating and ballooning trips can all be organised from operators in town. All three pursuits offer spectacular new perspectives on the landscape. Rafting around Jade Dragon Bridge (Yulong Qiao) is a particular highlight.
Guilin (city)
The provincial capital of Guilin has been a significant political and cultural centre since Tang-dynasty times (618 906), though at first glance there is little to see of this rich history almost the entire city was razed by the Japanese army in 1944. Still, Guilin remains attractive. Parks and osmanthus trees lighten the urban landscape, and a few limestone peaks rise above the buildings. The Li River cuts through town, and many small restaurants offer river cuisine, such as fish, eel, frog, turtle, snail, shrimp and snake.
Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan), topped by 500-year-old Puxian Pagoda, offers good views across the city. To the northwest, beside an 800-year-old banyan tree on the northe bank of the Rong Hu Lake, is an authentic remnant of the Old City. Further north the main hub of activity is the area around Central Square (Zhongxin Guangchang) and Zhongshan Lu. Between Central Square and the Li River, Zhengyang Lu pedestrian street is geared towards tourists, with a selection of restaurants, bars, galleries and souvenir stalls.
Guilin's pre-eminent historical sight is the Palace of the Jinjiang Princes (Jinjiang Wangfu), a short stroll north of the centre. This ancient city within a city has its very own karst mountain inside its walls (included in charge). Solitary Beauty Peak (Duxiu Feng) rises up above the Ming buildings, and climbing the 300 or so steps to the pagoda at the top rewards you with the delightful view enjoyed by princes and poets over the centuries.

THE Lop Nur borders the Taklimakan Desert in northweste China. It remained unknown to the outside world until Sven Hedin, a Swedish explorer, explored it at the begiing of the century. In the summer of 1980, Chinese biochemist Peng Jiamu disappeared while leading an expedition to Lop Nur. Many planes and people were sent out to find him but to no avail. The nightmare was repeated in 1996 when Chinese explorer Luo Chunshun, who escaped from death countless times during his eight years of exploration on foot, also died here. Thus many people tu pale at the mere mention of the place. This huge, desolate tract (some 100,000 square kilometers) was already a desert by the time of the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220) and nobody knows how many traders lost their lives traveling the Silk Road through the Lop Nur Silk Road tour .
The Lop Nur is the driest place in China and has an adverse climate. Aual precipitation is only 10-60 mm and some parts receive no rain at all, but evaporation has been measured at 2,000 mm. It is both dry and hot in the Lop Nur desert, with temperatures as high as 50 degrees Centigrade. On the surface the temperature can climb to 80 degrees Centigrade, stick an egg in the sand and it will be done in half an hour.
Life is hard in the Lop Nur due to the lack of water. If you stay too long under the sun, the skin on your hands begins to peel off and your lips chap. Even a pair of new shoes will be deformed in a couple of days because their moisture content will be ``robbed" by the dry air. Your skin tus red and becomes itchy very quickly here.
It is very windy and dusty in the Lop Nur. When the wind picks up to force 7 or 8, the desert around you is veiled in a curtain of sand. Even if you have tightened the ropes and pounded the stakes deeper to reinforce your tent, the howling wind is still frightening. And in the moing you will wake up to find your mouth, nose, ears, hair and anything else outside the sleeping bag full of sand.
Although adverse, the environment of Lop Nur is quite mysterious and appealing. Take the Yardang region as an example. In the Uygur language ``Yardang" means ``steep slopes," and is used to describe terrain with alteating eroded ravines and ridges affordable China tours.
There are many theories to explain the origin of the Yar-dangs, but generally people believe that they are shaped by the wind. Sand is blown away, leaving only stone and clay strata, which are then further eroded into irregularly shaped land forms. The Yardangs are usually a dozen or so meters high and several hundred meters long, and thousands of them, grand and majestic, extend for hundreds of kilometers in a maze. You may lose your way almost as soon as you enter, and therefore the Yardang is also called ``the ghost layer."

Mirages also add mystery to the Lop Nur. When the sun rises over the desolate desert, a mirage might appear just a few steps ahead of you: A pool of beautiful water surrounded by towering trees, or people moving about in a village. But when you head towards it, it may disappear mercilessly or simply stay always a few feet in front of you, luring you forward, until you have totally lost your way.
According to Wang Mili, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, there are neither water nor roads in the Lop Nur top 10 China tours, nor a single blade of grass or a single brook. Birds don"t ever fly over this desert. You can imagine how dangerous it is " you may walk for half a day only to find that you are back where you started.
The existence of Lop Nur dwellers makes the desert even more mysterious. "Nur" means "lake" in Mongolian. The Lop Nur people once lived in houses beside a giant lake. As Lop Nur lake gradually dried, they began to move to Milan, about 50 kilometers west of Lop Nur. History books on the ``Weste Regions" (a Han Dynasty term for the area west of Yumen Pass, including what is now Xinjiang and parts of Central Asia) record that the migrations, extinction of ancient kingdoms, and the sudden disappearance of a civilization in this area were all related to water. Milan was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) under the reign of Tubo and is now an archeological site. In the ruins of a Buddhist temple near Milan, a large number of precious cultural relics and a mural depicting angels have been found. The houses of the Lop Nur people were very simple, made of reeds and mud and basically unfuished. The Lop Nur people themselves were neat in appearance and dress.
Lop Nur is the only gateway to the southe and middle routes of the ancient Silk Road. Today more and more explorers, archeologists, geologists and even tourists are drawn here. As potassium-rich and fresh water are now tapped beneath the Lop Nur, this once ``hostile wasteland" can be expected to become an ``underground sea of gold" very soon.

Eating, playing and gossiping are at the heart of life in Chengdu China vacation deals.
“If you don’t experience these three things, you have not been to Chengdu,” says Meng Dan, a travel guide.
Combining two or more of the three is even better. Some examples include eating while indulging in a foot massage, looking at art or listening to poetry. Gossip goes down especially well if served with zhuyeqing, a green tea, and snacks like peanuts and melon seeds. The gossip in Chengdu is often as spicy as the food.
The locals penchant for gossip has led to the saying that people caot spend their youth in Sichuan but it’s a great place in your senior years.
Famous Chinese writer Yu Qiuyu attributes slow and comfortable pace to its history and geography.
“The city is guarded by lines of mountains and has never suffered a great famine or war,” Yu writes in “Cultural Odyssey.” “This has given the people a sense of safety, resulting in a good sense of humor among locals.”
Chengdu locals are proud of being the “home of the panda” and they agree there is some truth to what Yu says. But they are also quick to point out that their city is changing and becoming more open to outside influences, especially Weste culture.
This newfound sense of adventure and creativity can be seen in the food top China tours.
“The latest trend is bangbangji, boiled chicken marinated in spicy sauce with cheesecake, and serving hotpot with ice-cream,” a Chengdu foodie says.
On this three-day trip, travel guide Meng was asked to create an itinerary based around playful eating and drinking. In short, I wanted to feel like a Chengdu native.
Kuanzhai Lane
The old lane was built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and is a great destination to experience eating, playing and gossiping. Well, you will need to understand a little Mandarin to catch the gossip.
The buildings here combine north and south style architecture. The Chinese-style four-sided enclosed courtyard home, or siheyuan, originated in northe China. The siheyuan in the lane feature a southe Chinese style garden, incorporating a fish pond and brick carvings.
The best time to visit is when the sun is setting as the whole lane fades to a monochrome.
The old lane is fringed with food stalls selling xiaochi, or small snacks. Portions are small so don’t be shy about trying a variety of different items.
Try the sweet and spicy zhongshuijiao, which looks like northe style dumplings. They contain minced pork and are dipped in a shiny red oil that is made from sugar, chili and spices.
Flavorful, aromatic and slightly chewy dandanmian is another highlight popular China tours. These noodles are coated with a spicy sauce made from Sichuan pepper, minced pork, scallions and peanut butter. Liangfen is a translucent rice noodle drenched in a spicy sauce.
For those who can’t handle so much spicy fare, try the sweet and smooth sanheni, literally three different pastes. Glutinous rice, black sesame and walnut are ground and fried with lard until it creates a mash like texture. Vendors here sprinkle it with some crushed peanuts to add texture and aroma. You can also try tangyouguozi. These deep-fried glutinous rice balls are coated with sesame and brown sugar glaze. The crunchy exterior mixes well with the smooth, soft filling.
As for beverages, try liangcha, a sweet and slightly bitter drink made from local herbs.
Jiuyitang, an elegant teahouse at the coer of the lane, is a good source to catch the latest gossip.
Intricately graved classical Chinese fuiture, waitresses wearing ancient costumes and lines of red oil-paper umbrellas hanging from the ceiling make it feel like the Qing Dynasty.
The best seat is hidden inside, opposite a stage where Sichuan Opera is performed.
Many people go to drink tea while they read newspapers or gossip.
Many old residents in the area have been moved out since the city govement hopes to tu the lane into a leisure center. But some residents are said to be the descendants of nobles.

Walking through the old city you could convince yourself you were in Europe - if the streets were devoid of people and Chinese-language signage, that is. Actually though, it’s Macau.
Located across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong Hong Kong travel guide, until 1999 Macau was an overseas territory of Portugal. One of the world's most densely populated spots, Macau is best known as Asia's largest destination for gambling taking in even more revenue than Las Vegas. Gambling is Macau's biggest industry and busloads arrive daily from mainland China to try their luck. In addition, many Hong Kong visitors arrive on weekends with the same aim.
For many years, the Casino Lisboa was the most famous and a landmark well known to people outside Macau, but it is being eclipsed by Sands Casino which opened in 2004. Nevertheless, the original Casino Lisboa is still worth a visit as its halls contain many original antiques on display from the private collection of gambling tycoon Stanley Ho. Although best known for gambling, Macau is extremely rich in attractions and oozing with atmosphere, thanks to hundreds of years of fusion between European and Chinese cultures China guide.

Macau is a fascinating place to just walk around as the place is packed with churches, temples, fortresses and other old buildings bearing an interesting mix of Portuguese and Chinese characteristics. Besides buildings, there are also hundreds of narrow alleyways forming a maze in the old part of Macau where the people of Macau carry out businesses and work. If the sheer density of humans get to you, take a break and enjoy several pretty gardens or head to the island. The city streets do not seem to run in any particular patte and you'll most likely get lost at some stage, which is part of the fun of exploring Macau China travel deals. One of the interesting things to see in Macau is a statue of the Guanyin located next to the sea near the Sands Casino and MGM Grand.
Despite being a Chinese deity, the statue is distinctly European in design and resembles the statues of the Virgin Mary you can find in Europe. To some extent, rental scooters are also a wonderful way to see the sites of Macau. They are also the primary mode of transport for locals due to Macau's narrow streets and lack of car parking space. Scooters will seat one or two people and can provide the convenience to see some of the more beautiful and less crowded spots in Macau, such as Coloane Village, Cheoc Van Beach or the Portuguese fort. Macau is very small and it is easy to navigate around, while driving is much less hectic and more civilized than in other places in Asia.
You'll find most of the attractions in Macau Peninsula, but Taipa and Coloane, each with a pretty village, also draw hordes of visitors. The mixing of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures and religious traditions for more than four centuries has left Macau with an inimitable collection of holidays, festivals and events. The biggest event of the year - the Macau Grand Prix in November, when the main streets in Macau Peninsula are converted to a racetrack bearing similarities with the Mocau Grand Prix is just about time to celebrate, start your Macao China trip now!
